Senior WebMaster March 1997 June 1999

Design, develop, implement and maintain 7 virtual web sites on the Boeing Intranet (approx. 4000 pages). Pages HTML 3.2/4.0 compliant, universally accessible (platform/browser/server independent). Developed web applications via CGI using Perl, VB Script and SQL (Active Server Pages). Installed, setup and maintained Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 3/4 on NT4. Helped develop company-wide web guidelines, policies, procedures and standards in the Web Program Office and with the Web Advisory Board.

The Boeing Intranet is arguably the world's largest, with somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,100 web servers, a mix of Unix, NT, and mainframes, servicing close to 200,000 employees. In January, 1999, it contained about 1,000,000 static HTML pages, and countless dynamic, database-generated pages. Additionally, it has an on-line library of streaming videos, produced by BTV (Boeing TV).

This position has been two contracts through Nortec, Inc., a contracting agency.

The Web Advisory Board (WAB) site provides information about the charter, membership, meeting minutes and current status of Web issues and Web issue resolutions that have been agreed to at a company-wide level. The monthly Web Adviosry Board Meeting agendas, presentations and prior meeting reviews are posted.

The Company-Wide Web Visibility Room provides external customers, partners, suppliers, and Boeing employees an understanding of the background and approach that Boeing is employing to optimize Web utilization. Critical success factors to having a successful Web are identified and visible along with the appropriate owners. Several successful Web implementations are displayed to demonstrate how business processes are benefiting from Web implementations in their areas.

The Worldwide Site Operations Services (WWSOS) web site provides customers access to the group's products and services, an up-to-date status on all current projects, viewable by region or division, and an on-line method for requesting support. Additionally, an on-line, "Visibility Room" and process flow help this site meet Boeing's 2016 vision of using it's intranet as the foremost method of communication.

Boeing Web Help

The Boeing Web Help site was developed by a small team of WebMasters and writers, who were charged with creating a comprehensive web help site, for the novice and advanced surfers and developers. We combed the Boeing Intranet for existing web-related help pages and information. We then merged all of this information, filled in some missing pieces, created a common format, and produced the official companywide web help site. I was given an award for my efforts on this team.

Dynamic Organization Charts

The Dynamic Organization Charts were an effort to produce dynamic org charts automatically, based on existing HR databases within Boeing with links to e-mail, web pagers, and HR information. I succeeded in producing dynamic org charts from an Access database, but was unable to finish linking to the HR databases due to the massive effort of having a 215,000 employee database rewritten. Hopefully this will be completed at some time in the future...
